About Choice

Those favoring legalized abortion put a great deal of emphasis on "choice." They feel it is important that people have freedom of choice.

What is choice? Choice is the ability to decide between two or more options or courses of action. People make choices every single day. They decide such things as what to eat, what to wear, how they will react to situations when driving, etc. These are ALL choices. In one day, an individual may make as many one hundred or more choices.

Of course, the above CHOICES cannot be made by anyone who is not allowed to be born. Those who are not allowed to be born never make a single CHOICE throughout their very brief life.

The monopoly on the word "choice"
For those who favor legalized abortion, why is choice ONLY about abortion? Why should the abortion issue have a MONOPOLY on the word "choice"? This is a very NARROW definition of "choice." (And we know that pro-lifers are often referred to as 'narrow.') It restricts "choice" to one issue. CHOICE is very broad. Why should "choice" refer to abortion any more so than taxes, government funded health care, etc.?

"Pro-choice" / "Anti-choice"
ALL issues come down to choice. Typically, one has chosen to either be for a particular end ("pro-") or against a particular end ("anti-"). CHOICE goes either way. By making a decision on which side of the issue to support, one has made a CHOICE. They are not "pro-choice" or "anti-choice." These labels are meaningless in the manner used by those favoring legalized abortion. People can be pro-taxes, anti-taxes, pro-government funded health care, anti-government funded health care, etc. Taking a position on such issues means one has made a CHOICE. By making a choice about which side of an argument to favor, one is pro-choice. The only people who are TRULY "anti-choice" are those who sit on the fence and can't pick a side in the argument.

Truth in labeling
In the case of abortion, one is either pro-abortion or anti-abortion. Either they want abortion to be allowed or not to be allowed. But some of those favoring legalized abortion do not like the label "pro-abortion." Understood. Therefore, let's be frank. Abortion is a means to an end. What is this end? The end, or goal, of an abortion, is to destroy a human life. Therefore, even the pro-abortion/anti-abortion labels are not enough. The most accurate labels are pro-life and anti-life.

<!-- We are told that until one is born, one is nothing more than a "zygote," a "clump of cells," a "mass of undifferentiated tissue," etc. -->

Challenge so-called "pro-choicers."
When someone tells you that they believe in 'choice' or 'freedom of choice,' don't let them get away with such a statement. Ask them what "choices" they believe in. Ask them whether they are for "choice" in all matters or just abortion. Do not be pushy, but perhaps explain that such a view is really nothing more than pro-abortion.

When speaking about anything involving choice, make sure to USE the word choice. Don't let abortion have a monopoly over the word "choice!"

And they call this "choice"?

  • Taxpayers do not have a checkbox on tax forms asking if their hard earned tax money can be used for government funded abortion, artificial contraception, embryonic stem cell research (including existing lines), sex education in schools which promote artificial contraception, etc.
    And they call this "choice"?
  • Some women are threatened/manipulated into having an abortion by a boyfriend or husband who does not want to be financially responsible for the child. In such cases, the woman does not have any choice; she is talked into having an abortion. A young woman may forced into an abortion by her parents. And they call this "choice"?
  • Some Crisis Pregnancy Centers have ultrasound machines available for women. Some who favor legalized abortion are against the use of these machines. But we often hear the claim that pro-lifers allegedly don't trust women to make their own moral decisions. By making ultrasound images available, Crisis Pregnancy Centers are allowing women to be INFORMED. Being INFORMED allows one to make a true moral decision. They are making an informed CHOICE. We are also told that science is important. Well, clearly an ultrasound image is scientific. Why should women be in darkness? Why do those favoring legalized abortion have a problem with any of this? And they call this "choice"?
  • A human baby is sentenced to death without even the OPTION of a trial and a public defender (something afforded to every criminal, no matter what crime was committed).
    And they call this "choice"?
