Is This What They Call "Choice" for Young Women?

by Bill Claydon

Advocates of legalized abortion often talk about "choice." Some seem to especially be interested in "choice" for young women. With such concern for "choice," it is hoped people calling themselves "pro-choice" would be displeased with schools that deny young women the CHOICE to wear clothing that peacefully witnesses for life.
April 25th is the anniversary of the so-called "March for Women's Lives." On April 25, 2004, this event was held in Washington, D.C., to preserve legalized killing of babies in the womb. These babies could be boys or they could be girls. And this was called the "March for Women's Lives."

On the first anniversary of this event, some pro-life people wore shirts with messages that conveyed respect for ALL life, including the most innocent and vulnerable. Some young women tried to wear pro-life shirts at school. According to an article in LifeNews, a few schools threatened certain young women with punishment for wearing pro-life shirts.

We hear so much talk about abortion being a "Constitutional right." This is despite the fact that there is no Constitutional amendment allowing babies to be slaughtered in the womb. Yet, there is a very real First Amendment which talks about freedom of speech. On the other hand, the First Amendment talks about the free practice of religion. Some state governments are prohibiting pharmacists from the free practice of their religion by forcing them to act as human vending machines against their consciences. If freedom of religion is out, it makes sense that freedom of speech is out as well.

One of the justifications for denying choice was an alleged concern about possible harm coming to students wearing pro-life t-shirts. Students wear messages on t-shirts all the time. Anyone can be 'offended' by any word or phrase. If the school fears for the safety of its students because of a message on a t-shirt, they should fairly and equally ban ALL messages. They should require nothing other than colors. Better yet, why not just require uniforms?

In one case, according to the article, one of two sisters was graduating. That graduating sister complied with the order denying her CHOICE. The other sister did not comply. Because of this, the school threatened to punish the sister who was scheduled to graduate, delaying her graduation. If the school has an issue with one student in a family, clearly they should keep the issue with THAT student and the student's parents. Pressure should NOT be applied to a sibling who HAS complied with rules.

The article describes another situation where a young woman was told that her shirt showing an unborn baby was "too graphic" for younger children. The article did NOT say that this was a graphic abortion picture; it was merely a picture of a developing human baby. When "sex education" is being given at younger and younger ages in this country, thanks to a culture that promotes sexual immorality, it is difficult to understand a concern about a picture of the development of a human baby being considered "graphic."

It is hoped that those who talk so much about "choice" would take notice of these outrageous DENIALS of choice. But, this just seems like yet another group of people being denied choice. In various parts of the country, pharmacists, crisis pregnancy centers, women wanting to learn what a "clump of cells" really looks like via an affordable ultrasound, parents of teenagers, and others are all having CHOICE stripped away. All over the world, babies scheduled for abortion are denied ALL choice. It seems that "choice" is only a concern when it comes to the legalized ability to slaughter babies in the womb.
